common grackles They empty my feeder

I bought 2, six sided seed feeder, that hold about 2 lb of food each. I fill them. and about an hour or 2 later,  the big grackles while eating the sunflower seeds, have pushed all of the remaining seed on the ground I don't mind how the birds get the food. but its mounding and with all the rain we have had in southeast tip of Va. its also molding. there is so much food on the ground I've had a pair of ducks in my yard to feed. I feed the squirells peanuts in a separate area and know its not them. hate the tube feeders, only little bird can eat. any solutions?

    Hi,

I love most birds but NOT grackles they are pigs and bullies.

If you don't mind them, try hanging a tray feeder underneath to catch the falling seed to keep it off the ground.  It is dangerous for birds to eat spoiled seed on the ground.  You didn't mention the type of feeders you have.  If there are perches try shortening them so that the grackles can't sit while eating.  You can also try removing your feeders for a week or two they might move on to another food source.

     Happy Birding,

    John

Oh boy, I am having this problem at present too!  I just filled my post feeder with at least 10 lbs of seed 2 days ago, and the grackles have emptied it already!  What sloppy nasty birds they are, can't stand the things!  Typical blackbirds.  They get in there and throw seed out all over the ground, grrrrrrr!  I'm just not going to fill the big feeder for awhile, and will just fill my hanging and finch feeders for the time being.  I love feeding and attracting nice varieties of birds to my yard, but unfortunately it attracts the undesirables as well.

grackles yuck!  bad bird as my 2 yo grand-daughter would say..lol

i have been switching my feeders around about every 2 weeks and my oh my the birds hate it!  but, the grackles are more confused than the others and they(the grackles) have been leaving the feeders alone for a day or 2 then thier back but i'm hoping they will get tired of playing hunt and seek and go away.  i have also switched the food i use i have 1 feeder that is a generic songbird mix and that seems to be thier favourite.  i have a finch feeder, a suet feeder, and a hummer/oriole feeder as well as a tray feeder that i have switched over to black oil sunflower seeds.   My yard has become a pole city with all the shephards poles lol.  my hubby just shakes his head at me and the little boy who mows my yard has started giving me dirty looks lol  oh well....happy birding
