    crazy bird lady

I am so excited!  my family has told me i'm "crazy" because I have been watching the birds at my feeder and trying hard to identify them.  My daughters especially.  lol.  However, when she called and described a bird that is nesting in her neighbors yard I knew just what it was!   Thank you to everyone here.  You have all been so helpful and kind as I start out on my new hobby. Big Smile

    P.S.

It was a purple Martin :)

This is a great hobby huh? I cannot get enough of it. It's actually really soothing for me, I am an anxious person and watching birds is so calming.

Because of my health I have had to "retire".   I spend the time watching "My" birds and on the computer.  this site and  birdspix.com have helped to ease the time and help me through the day.

    Re: crazy bird lady

I agree with you so much.  I can't wait to get home at the end of the day to go out in my backyard to see and hear the birds.  I think I missed my calling.  I too find it very soothing and stress relieving.  It is my "free" therapy.  And when it rains, I just get on-line and read the forums on Whatbird.

Thank you all so much for sharing!

    Re: crazy bird lady

I'm the crazy bird lady in my family and I think even in my community!  We have several who feed hummingbirds but done who actively watch them to ID them and keep records of them.  My son thinks it's nerdy or dorky but that's OK, too!

I suppose birdwatching has some calming aspects, except when I'm trying to track one down that won't stay put or when I search and search for an ID and just can't quite come up with it.  it's probably more exciting than calming for me but I love it anyway!

    Re: crazy bird lady

I guess I am the crazy bird lady in my family. My oldest daughter, 28 yrs old, asked me if I was wanting to be famous by finding a new species. I told her no, that I did not expect that to happen but that I did want to be able to identify the birds in our area without having to pick up an ID book everytime. I have place a couple more bird feeders and a bird bath and I am hoping to attract even more birds to my yard. Just yesterday one of my daughters happen to look out the window and yelled to me, "Mom, there a pretty blue bird out here now!"  It was great to be able to tell her that it is an Indigo Bunting.

    Re: crazy bird lady

Not too long ago I was in the grocery store looking at the day old bread rack. I heard someone come up behind me and say; "there is the bird lady, are you going to feed the birds today?"

I have to admit I was a bit taken aback at first but he was such a nice man. He has seen me at the lake before. He asked me where I was going and I think he actually wanted to join me.....so there are "crazy" bird men too!

    Re: crazy bird lady

Well I for one wouldn't like to be known as the "Crazy Bird Lady". For years I have been called "Birdman", but, not because of watching the birds. Every one called me "Birdman" because I am a falconer and I always had the birds {golden eagle, harris hawk and sometimes a falcon} in the back of my truck no matter where I went. Once a year I would do a big show {Safari Club International} for the kids {about 3500} and I would also go to schools for presentations with the birds. So every one called me "Birdman". Now that I have moved to New Mexico, I actually watch all the birds in my backyard.
