Need more help from the experts

    Attachment: P5160074B.jpg

I really DO try to figure these out! I have no idea on the size of this bird, just that it was much larger than the Western Kingbirds on a power line that I was photographing. NE Colorado plains. Thanks for your help.

It could be a robin or a mourning dove. Did it make any noise as it flew away?

Thanks, spottedowl. It was too far away to hear any noise because I was also in my house. I've been trying hard to identify the birds from shapes and flight patterns - what a challenge! Your suggestion of a mourning dove very likely is the bird. Thank you - again!

    It's a dove I think, but I don't think it's a mourning dove. Mourning dove's tails look more triangular.

Eurasian Collared Dove then? The color showing on the wings would fit.

I can almost guarantee you it's not a dove. Doves have a pointed tail. It looks more like a pigeon to me.

I'm convinced it's an Eurasian-collared Dove. I found this picture when editing this afternoon.

Both look like mourning doves...the bottom really does.
Today I woke up in a bird's nest.

No, Nola, Mourning Doves look much different. They are smaller, browner, with darker spots on their back halfs. These are Eurasian Collared Doves - gray with a black half collar on their necks. They are beautiful, graceful birds to watch.

Tail feathers are totally different too.

That's right! It's how you could have almost guaranteed it was not a Mourning Dove.  Geeked

As soon as I saw this pic Western Kingbird flashed to mind. This is definitely not a dove of any species. Note the solid black tail with faintly visible white outer tail feather on the right. You can even see the yellow belly there, it seems to fit perfectly.

    LOL, yup.  Big Smile

I read an article not too long ago that said their range is greatly expanding with a few of them showing up in Ohio. I've never seen one.

Re: Need more help from the experts

Hmmm, featherbrain, didn't think I would ever argue with you. Well, ok, maybe not "argue" but not totally agree, either! I'm still leaning toward the EC Dove, for a couple reasons. I was taking pictures of two Western Kingbirds sitting on a power line half way down the alley of the block across the street from me. This bird appeared to be much larger than the kingbirds, which were so blurry in the picture you couldn't tell that's what they were. I'm aware a bird in flight would appear larger than it would while perched, but this was just much larger than I would expect the kingbirds to be.

I see what you suggest is the yellow belly, but there are bits on the wings that also appear to be yellowish to me. And the white line is from the greatly enlarged picture. There is actually a white line completely around the bird. And in the second picture, don't the outer tail feathers of the dove appear to be white or at least much lighter? I think the tail may appear to be solid black because of the lighting and the angle of the bird.

Guess I'm going to have to take lots & lots of pictures of birds at the same location and hope to eventually catch one (I've already identified) in flight in the same position!
