2-3 Carolina Chickadees just showed up.  Also a nest of 3 Robins on my friend's porch (see attached) -- no idea how they're all going to still fit in the nest in a few days!

    Re: Baby Watch 2008

So far I have seen about 4 tufted titmice, 1 downy woodpecker, and several black-capped chickadees, at least one family of goldfinches and at least one family of house sparrows.  These are all jueveniles.  I haven't searched much for nests.  I am looking forward to seeing--cardinals, eastern towhees, indigo buntings and  any other little birds that come my way.

I have seen various ....but will mention seeing (and hearing) a juvenile crow. I do not remember ever noticing any before. I love it 'cause I have learned to follow the "baby cry" and low quivering, flapping wings.

I have learned to take note of "young bird voices" 'cause this is one more cue telling me that is a "child". At first glance baby can look as big and mom or dad.

    Re: Baby Watch 2008

So far, just the baby chipping sparrows and about a dozen different woodpeckers.  My special woodpecker ended up splatted face first against the window again, wings straight out to the sides, looking a little like a white bat.  I swear that he thinks its fun!

Do non-bird babies count?  The baby cottontails left the nest a couple of weeks ago, and one of them showed up at my feeding area this week.  And I saw Momma doing the Eastern Cottontail mating dance about the same time, so there will probably be another nest within the next two weeks. (I gots pictures of those too!)

1 rb grosbeak juvenile.  I think they only come around when the weather has been wet for awhile.  Since I moved the feeders to the porch, I periodically get wonderful surprises.  A few nights ago, we were sitting on the couch watching tv, when I looked out and there was what I first thought was a house finch(we have a few of those who are regulars now).  Then I realized it was about twice the size and kind of squealed in delight and surprise. It had to be a rb grosbeak.  It flew away because the window was open.  I thought I had blown it, but a few seconds later, I looked up and there was the whole family, mom, dad, and child.  Again I scared them away with my vocalized response--I was so.... excited.  They didn't come back. bummer!  Maybe I will see them again.

    Re: Baby Watch 2008

My new thrill today was a pair of American Gold Finches... My wife brought home some new bird food, so I tried it out as the feeder was at it's low spot...  Within 5 mins, the Finches showed up...  Coincidental or not, they stayed for a few and then flew off...  I just wish I had the lens  to get them...  Soon hopefully...

Also, a Tufted Titmouse too... Black Cap Chickdee's, Sparrows, Robins, Cardinals, Purple Finches, House Finch, Blue Jays, Morning Doves..

Did they get you to trade, your hero's for ghosts?

Here's one of the baby wrens that flew the nest Thursday.  They are probably from the nest on my grandmother's porch, a photo of one of the parents at the nest is in my gallery.

So far in my yard I've seen young Eurasian Collared Doves, Mourning Doves, Starlings, Common Grackles (oh, so noisy!!!), Robins, Blue Jays (funny, funny younguns) and best of all yesterday a tiny Red Breasted Nuthatch! The picture is fuzzy because this little one doesn't have it's land legs yet and kept moving, almost losing its balance whenever it would land.  Smile

2 juvenile phoebes!  They were so fun to watch this morning.  Mom and Dad were there flying around collecting food.  And 2 more downy juniors(1 boy and 1 girl).

    Re: Baby Watch 2008

I wish I could see some babies!  All I keep seeing are parts of eggs on the ground and busy moms and dads tending to the young.  The birds build their nests up so high I can't see the babies!

So far this year though I've seen the following nests...Tufted Titmouse, European Starling, American Robin, Carolina Wren and American Goldfinch.  The Carolina Wrens built their nest in my grill!  We didn't grill out for about a week and a half and in that little amount of time they built a nest!  I was getting ready to cook some hot dogs and it was neatly built in the corner of the grill.  My husband carfeully moved it to an arbeveita bush.  There were no eggs yet so I don't know if the mamma will find it or come back to it.  I guess we'll see.
