    An 'Out of bounds' Bird?

    Hi Members;

    I live in San Lorenzo, CA.  This morning my wife and several friends were in the back yard when an unusual bird landed on the birdbath.  We watched while he tested the water and made himself right 'home' with a lenghty flutter of his wings showering water three feet in every direction!  What a wonderful site!

    We were all so shocked to see him, I didn't think to grab the camera.  He showered for about three minutes, ate seeds that had been put out earlier, and sang the exact song that is listed under the heading of an ALTAMIRA ORIOLE.

    Now, it seems to me, everything I look into, for information about this bird, his is not supposed to be here!

    'Papers' or no 'papers', he can migrate here anytime he likes.  Smile

    Can anyone tell me what his summer boundries may be?  I am happy to log him as a visitor to my yard.

    Thank you for any input you may have.

    To quote Cornell "The Altamira Oriole is a bird of Mexico and Central America whose range just reaches into southern Texas."

    Could your bird possibly be a Hooded Oriole?

    Altamira Oriole has never occurred in California. Your bird is probably a Hooded or Bullock's Oriole. You should listen to the sounds of those species as well (maybe you already did.) If you are able to get a photo we would be able to ID it for sure.
