    Weird...and scary (sort of)

Wednesday night around  8:30 I was on my patio grilling some burgers.  A Mockingbird landed on the fence about 2 ft. from me.  Then another Mockingbird, then another, until there were 6 Mockingbirds lined up on the fence just looking at me.  They were super close.  I just started talking to them, and every so often one would cock his head like he was listening to me. One hopped down to the patio and was just walking around my feet like I wasn't even there.  I just kept flipping my burgers and talking to them.  This went on for over 5 minutes.  I could see my husband looking out the kitchen window and motioned for him to get the camera.  When he came out the back door, they all flew away.  I had started to feel like I was in a Hitchcock movie for a bit there.  I see Mockingbirds all the time in my yard, but never together like that.  Was something about my grilling drawing them in? Is this usual behaviour for them?

It was awesome as it was happening, but I do believe that something was drawing them in.  I don't know what they were after, but it had to be something near my grill.  It sits near a very large tree, that I have seen them in, but as I said, never in those numbers.  But I guess if you see one, you just assume that the next one you see is the same bird, unless there is something unusual about it, or the size is different.  For all I know I might have 30 Mockingbirds in my back yard!! :)))

Perhaps a carnivorous variety of mocking bird waiting for you to drop a burger?  Wink

Too funny.  Well whatever they are after brought them a little too close to the house and last night my dog nabbed one of them and was getting ready for a snack. By the time I saw what was happening it was too late for the Mockinbird. Very sad and to say the least, my dog is literally in the "dog house".

That is very odd.  I've never seen more than 1 or 2 of them together before.

The other night, my family and I were on our back deck around Midnight talking (with a big outdoor light on) and a Mockingbird was singing his album.  We decided to have fun with it - and we whistled back different notes.  He copied almost every one - right after we would whistle them.  It was pretty cool!

I am beginning to believe they really like people!

That's a great story. I like mockingbirds. Used to have one around my place that would imitate no less than about 10 different birds. Had another one when I lived in an apartment imitate children screaming. That bird was pretty cool.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because you were there.
