    Question about Thrush

    Hi all,

Spotted this thrush in Tallahassee this afternoon.  I think it might be a Swainson's, but wanted to hear other opinions.

    Thanks,

    Robert

    Re: Question about Thrush

From this angle I can not tell what species this bird is. I can tell for sure that it is a thrush of some sort though.

    Re: Question about Thrush

I think the dark tail and the chest marks are an indicator of the species (I know it's not a Wood Thrush, e.g.).

    Re: Question about Thrush

Simply not possible to pinpoint the species from this picture.

    Re: Question about Thrush

I see a white eye ring, looks like a wood thrush to me.

Nearly all the thrushes have a white eye ring.

    Re: Question about Thrush

I'd suggest it's not a Wood Thrush, and the closest we can get is to say "Catharus species"....

    Re: Question about Thrush

I agree it is a thrush. Looking at the range map for Tallahassee, FL - the only choices are Wood Thrush (summer) and Hermit Thrush (Winter). My first thought was Hermit - and looking at other pics and what not - I'm 99% sure. Why? Because the Wood Thrush's spots are darker, more spread out and reach further down the front. The Hermit has a more defined Malar Stripe whereas the Wood Thrush's stripe is obscured by "extra" spotting.

    Re: Question about Thrush

I can't make out the species from the picture, but I believe that we can rule out the Wood Thrush: They are much more heavily spotted than the other Thrushes.

What is not forbidden is inevitable.

    Re: Question about Thrush

Audubon reports a high number of wood thrushes in that area, folks. Yes, I know they all have white eye rings!!!!
