I'm thinking of backing my pics up online and am somewhat bewildered by the plethora of choices.  Also those sites that are set up to let photogs actually sell their pics are interesting.  Do pics actually get sold off of those sites?

I think the grand daddy of all free storage sites is Flickr, which lets you sell your photos and set them as protected in various ways. Another neat site is Google's Picasa, which works with a desktop application.

One of the oldest and more famous paid site is pbase. I have never seen a good comparison of photo storage sites and if anyone would like to write such an article I would be willing to do a trade for anything in our store.

This is not information on online backup... but I just bought a 2 TB external hard drive storage from Fry's electronics for 269.00.  That is a lot of storage... and can be set up as RAID 1 storage which cuts the storage to one Terrabyte but gives you duplication on one storage system.

I use zenfolio, which I found much easier to use (both in uploading and using layout templates) than pbase, and is less cluttered than Flickr (and is priced similarly to pbase, IIRC).

For free, Picasaweb is waaaay better for storage purposes.  You're allowed more storage space and room for much better organization and labeling.  That being said, Flickr is far more interactive, you can send messages to people, you can add notes to pictures (yours or those of others), and you can start or join groups in order to share your photographs and attract similar photographs from others.

I use both, personally.

Since you inquired about selling photos on sites, I use redbubble.com

I've sold a few images, it's based out of Australia.  The other sites mentioned are good as well.  The only one I use to sell is redbubble.
