    Re: Common Redpoll

I have what I believe are a trio of redpolls visiting my yard. At first, it was just the male and female, and they would only drink at my birdbath. After a while, the male discovered my window feeder with black oil sunflower seeds. Recently, the female disappeared, but the male and a juvenile have been hanging out together, quite often perched on my tiny feeder chowing down on the seeds together.  I rather thought the female might be sitting a nest somewhere, as the females of all my other "visiting" pairs have been also withdrawing as of late.

Is this common of redpolls, for males and juvies to hang out together? I'm new to backyard birdwatching, but I'm hooked and have an incredible set-up, where some of the birds come within inches of me!

Also, I'm in upstate NY, and from looking at the map, it appears that redpolls are rather rare in this area this time of year?

    Hi there.....

I am in upstate NY too...on Lake Ontario...where are you?!

I cannot answer your question about adult males and the juvies but usually when I have seen redpolls they seem to be in groups a lot both with sexes and they have goood appetites at the feeders.

Now of course spring is bringing all kinds of surprises with matings and new births and behavior.

I'm in the Glens Fall/Saratoga area. So far, I've onlky seen these three, but they are fairly new to my feeder, so they may still be checking me out before they bring in more.  It took one robin three weeks before he got brave enough!
