Crying [:'(] Winged Explorer Has Been Discontinued

THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED - YOU CAN GET THE SAME FUNCTIONALITY AS WINGED EXPLORER WITH OUR IBIRD PRODUCT AVAILABLE FOR THE IPHONE OR IPOD TOUCH. We understand this is a disappointment to the many users of Windows Mobile Software and we wish that we could continue to sell the product. The problem is that every device company that uses the Microsoft Mobile software implements it differently. This produces a situation where a program as complex as Winged Explorer will not work the same on every device. The result to us as been an overwhelming large amount of tech support is needed to help people get the product working. Out of every 10 copies we sell, at least 5 people have problems.

If Microsoft updates Windows Mobile so that it functions more consistently, and if they create a version of Windows Mobile that is as modern as the Apple iPhone, we will consider republishing Winged Explorer. However all is not lost.

We have created a version of Winged Explorer for the new Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. iBird has become one of Apple's most popular products for the iPhone. You can learn more about iBird at this link: http://www.ibirdexplorer.com Read the "What the Expert's Are Saying" to see how well iBird has been received by the birding community.

    Sincerely

I must say I am very disappointed, but I understand your position.   Because Windows Mobile is available for so many different devices, there are numerous hardware differences that must be accounted for (screen resolution, even screen shape, number of buttons, different sound drivers, etc...  Unfortunatly for me, the iPhone is severely deficient in business applications that I need, and AT&T has horrible coverage (may have more bars in more places, but more dropped calls too.  I wouldn't be caught dead using them as my carrier).

Maybe you'll have better luck when Microsoft releases Windows Mobile 7.  I will of course be right there to Beta test for you again if you ever want to try the platform again.

No one can be as disappointed as I am Crying

I spent over 2 years developing for WinMo - it was at the time the "state of the art" but has been just left in the dust by the iPhone. Now that I have had an iPhone and iPod Touch for years I clearly see how far behind Microsoft has let their technology slide.

I wanted the Android to be a success but I see the same fate awaits it as its following the Microsoft model - one generic OS and dozens of carriers - which means anyone who developes for that platform will have to make it work on each device as every carrier does things differently.

I believe the Palm Pre is the next potential target for mobile products but we have to wait and see what multitasking does to battery life and performance.

You could also jail break your iPhone to get away from AT&T but then you also break Apple's warranty and create other problems.

Why dont you get an iPod Touch - $229 at best buy - I'll give you a free copy of iBird for it and you will be really happy I promise.

That might be the way to go.  I just wish they had the Touch with a hard drive or more memory.  If I am going to get another iPod (I have a Nano) I would like it to carry all of my music like my Wife can on her "Classic".

It would not have the advantage of always being with me for those rare bird spottings like my phone is, but I could certainly take it on birding trips when it will be the most use anyway.  That is what I am actually doing now, since I am actually one of the problems that couldn't be solved.  I have a custom Rom on my XV6900 that has SQLCE 3.5 but not 2.0, so Winged Explorer won't run on it.   When I go birding, I take my spare XV6900 which has the Verizon stock ROM and Winged Explorer works fine on it, so I really wouldn't be in any different shape.

I have a birthday coming up at the end of the month.  We'll see how finances are then to see if I want to invest in the Touch.  I'll let you know if I want to take you up on your offer.

I think you will find that WinMo 7 will be good enough to take another stab at this.  I have a little bit of an inside track on part of it (around speech capabilities) and I think it is going to give Apple a run for their money.

To say that I am disappointed would be an understatement.  I have wanted this for a long time, and when I get a phone at a reasonable price that will properly run it (Treo 750), it is discontinued.  I have downloaded the demo and it works without a flaw.

My daughter has the National Geographic Handheld birds, and that works wonderful on her phone.  I was hoping that I could get this as well, and now I am out of luck for something that worked perfectly well for me. I shouldn't have to spend a couple hundred more dollars to get a new phone, when I just bought one.  If there is any way at all to get the full program as is now, I'd be delighted in finding out how.  I'm quite frankly desperate for it.

I too downloaded the demo and it is working perfectly, but hadn't purchased the full version yet.  If this is anyway to obtain the Windows Mobile version, please let me know.

Unfortunately, I don't plan on getting an Iphone anytime soon, and don't want to buy an Ipod touch just for birding.

Re: Winged Explorer Has Been Discontinued

This is too bad.  Winged Explorer works great on my Samsung Omnia.  I showed my mom Winged Explorer the other day -- we ID'ed a Pine Siskin using it.  When we clicked on Pine Siskin and that was the bird that was sitting on her feeder, her jaw dropped.  She said, "I don't think I have ever been jealous of any gadget you've ever had ... until now!"

We are both on Verizon, both have iPod Nanos (no reason to get an iTouch), and both love Winged Explorer.  :(

She was looking into getting an Omnia as well; I suppose I should tell her to hold off.

would be nice if it was offered as freeware with no support plainly stated.  then those of us who know it would work could be happy.

Re: Winged Explorer Has Been Discontinued

Will the updater remain active for some period of time?  I may need to do a re-install if the developer of my custom ROM fixes the SQLCE issue on my primary phone, and I would want to then update to the current release and database (or would the updater have left those files somewhere on my computer and is there a way to do the update manually?)

Everything is going to be removed, there will be no support, no demo downloads, etc.  Suggest you make a copy of your files in case something goes wrong.l

The database is too valuable to offer this as freeware.

Re: Winged Explorer Has Been Discontinued

I just purchased Winged Explorer on 2/19 and fortunately it works on my device. Since it was discontinued less than 2 months after I purchased it, what's the possibility of upgrading to IBird, either free or a price less than 29.99?
