I posted pictures of the two Downy Woodpeckers I saw a few days ago in the BJ's Pics gallery.
The birds were traveling/feeding together but they were both male. One may have been slightly larger than the other but since they were never perched side-by-side and never still for many seconds at a time, it's hard to say.
The 2nd one seems to have some tiny white spots in the dark area above his eyes. Could this mean that he is a really young bird or are the spots just common to all Downy Woodpeckers?
I admit, I tend to take pictures first and ask questions (like just what kind of bird was that anyway) later. I try to get as many photos and from as many different angles as the bird will allow. Then study the series of shots to make the ID. I'm new at this and it takes me a while, but I'm learning.
