Thanks, Snowy Owl for the reply. Looking at the illustration of House Sparrow, it could very well have been one...I really didn't "examine" him, but kept him sheltered in my hands close to my body so he wouldn't be too afraid or escape back into the jaws of the feline (FYI, I know cats are a big danger to birds and I do not let my cats roam outside.)
I don't know whether these birds were feeding in numbers...the few times I have noticed the little bird that skitters away on the ground, at most, there might have been two other birds near him/her and I'm not sure whether they were the same as the skitterer or not. I suppose Sparrows eat just about everything, so that this little bird feeding beneath the Finch feeders doesn't mean much.
We're not in a subdivision per se, but on 14 acres of what remains of my Dad's farm.
My husband took a photo of a little bird that MAY be or at least very similar to the little bird. I will post it. ASAP.
