Hello, I have not given up looking through more lists of woodpecker and I have found another one, Red-bellied Woodpecker. Also, I have read that when u see a Pileated, there is no mistakening it for another type of woodpecker, so I have to disagree with the Pileated theory. Again this one's head was smooth, silky looking and shaped like a Dove/Pigeon with a semi long neck and a semi long beak. Also, I have said in previous replies that the body was 95% black, I only saw it from the front view only, so I did not see its back or the top side of its tail, but it looked two tune to me. Red and then black all the way down the front.
At about 9 inches he fits, but it looks like he does not get this far north, but mother nature is standing on her head this days and everything is just a little out of wack. Also, you say no woodpecker is all black and red, but what about hybrids, or do woodpeckers stick to their own particular group?
I have been watching a Northern Flicker that is 9-10 inches long, "tops" and it has a very defined black ring around its neck and a patch on its breast that is all black. Its patch is shaped like a "coat-of-arms". The patch is below the neck line and sits right in the middle of its breast. It sure looks like a Northern Flickers(red patch on the back of its head), but its looks a lot less scary than all the Northern Flickers, I've seen. I have the camera on the window ledge and I am waiting for the chance to take a nice picture of it. It been hanging around the neighbour since Oct. so I should be able to get a shot of it soon.
Thank you for your comment and it looks like you know your birds, judging by all your replies and if anybody can tell me what I saw it would be you. I am trying to get a pic of the Red-headed Bird, so please bare with me.
Neil
