Cannot ID these little hawks I see frequently when I am driving in NYS: darker tan or brown back (?solid?), white underside w/brown spots, hawk-shaped, curved beak, about 14 in. long, often perches in scraggy tree near open roadside.
Whatbird came up with Prairie hawk, which looks right but does not live here, or Merlin, with gray-blue back - no gray-blue at all on these guys, just white, tan, light brown. I would love to know. They look so cool overseeing their domain from their craggy perch... Tress
