I feed "sun flower hearts" in one of my feeders: Chickdees, Titmice, nuthatches and several kinds of finches seem to love it and of course the spilled seed is consumed by the squirrels, doves and Juncos. This one of the Droll Yankee feeders with the springy perches which ( with a dome ) really do keep squirrels away. Both the feeder and feed are very expensive which we justify as an entertainment expense.
My favorite feeder however is a simple mesh bag whose weave is tight enough the it will hold Niger seed, but loose enough the finches can work out the seed. The feeder is always mobbed by Goldfinches and now Pine Siskins. The bag costs about a buck!
What is not forbidden is inevitable.
