Hi. I don't know much about birds except that I love watching them. I have a bird feeder in my back yard (I live in the suburbs of Chicago). Usually the feeder attracts sparrows, cardinals, and grey doves. When I'm lucky I'll spot a robin prancing through the yard, or a woodpecker hanging on the bark of the tree. Today, I had two wonderful surprises. As I past my window I spotted something that, at first glance, appeared to be debris blown in by the wind. I thought it was a piece of a plastic recyling bag, as the color was a very bright blue. I was elated when I realized it was a little blue bird eating seeds off the ground. Unfortunately, I was only able to enjoy his presence for a short time as he was on his way in about a minutes time. Can anyone give me a clue as to what type of bird this was? His body was entirely blue and his body size and structure seemed to resemble that of a sparrow. Sorry, I didn't get much more than that.
My second surprise came less than a minute later. As my eyes searched for signs of the little blue bird, I realized that I had a second new visitor perched on my feeder. He had lots of black on the back of his body with white underfeathers and, I believe, some white mixed in toward his tail and maybe under his wings. He had a bright red throat and a yellow beak. His size and body shape were more along the lines of a robin. I've searched the web trying to find out who my visitors were, but didn't find anything definite. If anyone has any info, I'd appreciate it very much!
Best regards,
Teresa
