They are generally a little bit bigger than mourning doves. Last week, what appears to be a hawk landed on the tree, but when I examined it closely, it clearly had the marking of a blue jay (crest and the distinctly marking), though it was more dark gray than blue. In any case this guy was over twice the size of the blue jay that come to visit my patio. I try to snap a picture but it flew away before I could.

Ironically, a couple of days later, I thought it had return, so I went out to see if I can bribe it with some peanut. It turned out to be a red tail hawk this time. He definitely didn't want peanuts.

Was this some mega-large specifies of Jay or was this guy some sort of mutant? I can imagine that it is not a Jay since the contrasting color scheme is rather distinctive.

Paul

San Francisco Bay bird confirmations and questions

Although I'm still struggling with birds on the land, it seemed a shame to not even try the many birds on the shores, marshes, muflats, etc. in and around the San Francisco Bay. So the past two weekends, I went to the water to see what I could find.

I switch to millet, which they like too.

However, in the past couple of days, I haven't seen any, just one or two that come alone. Instead, I get giant flocks of sparrows. They generally don't boot other birds out of the feeders. One odd bit I notice is that they are fairly hard to intimidate or scare. Usually at the feeder, the flock will eat and then suddenly fly away into the bushes. Most of the time, this appears to be false alarm (hawks do come, but are rare). Usually the Mourning Doves are the only birds left eating. When the blue jays comes screaming at the birds, the mourning dove just stand their ground and ignore the blue jays when most of the birds have run away.

Is this true with most mourning doves?

Paul

Orange-crowned confirmation?

After watching the McGillivray's Warbler that's been hanging around the area since Tuesday, I went back in to find some Orange-crowned warblers that have been driving me crazy all week. I have never seen this before. Is this normal, or should I report an injured bird? I don't want to try to make him fly if he is injured, so I haven't tried to get too close.

Hooded Merganser

OK OK OK This bird is not suppose to be here... just green dots in Sibley's...
