I'll throw my $0.02 in and suggest Canon SX10IS ... about $400 for 10 MP, 20x digital zoom, great macro shots and easy to use ... start with AUTO and take great shots while learning everything else ... btw, forgot to mention it has a hot shoe so you'll be able to get a better flash than what it comes with.

Nikon P80. It's great for beginners as you can use "Point and Shoot" as you get used to it. It's got an 18x Optical Zoom and a Wide Angle Lens. It's about $400 depending on where you go. If you look at my gallery, it's what every picture is taken with.

So I've decided that I'd like to try photographing these birds I keep tracking down. However, I don't really know anything about photography.

So what would you suggest for someone starting out? I'd like a digital camera, and I'm assuming at least one lens.

Money is also an issue, so I'm sure I can't afford top of the line. I'm pretty sure I'll have to look at something second hand, maybe try some estate sales or police auctions.

I do realize that I may not be able to afford it at all at this time. I'm just needing some help with some initial research right now.

Heckler money is a huge issue for me I have a canon 10D camera body and a number of lenses 3 of which I brought new but the as for the rest I brought from ebay. Ebay I have never had a problem buying from Ebay so long as I follow these rules.

Check the sellers rating and what people say about that seller in the sellers feed back make sure that the shipping and handling is reasonable. set your maximin price and and I tend to do my bidding in the last 40 seconds of the auction.

I checked out write up on cameras and what folks was saying about them and decided I wanted canon DSLR I have a web site that I am uploading my photos to it also has a list of the equipment that I use My main lens is a Sigma 70-300 mm DG Macro lens
