Congrats on the lens, Goose, and nice work with the photos!

I just rented a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 AF-S VR for my North Carolina trip. I'm supposed to send it back on Tuesday, and it's going to be painful. I LOVE this lens! Despite the price tag, I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy one at some point. There's just no comparison in terms of sharpness and depth of field with my own 70-300mm lens. It wasn't real cheap to rent ($280 for a week), but I'm really glad I did it.

I agree on the weight factor. In my case, I took a chance and bought a cheap $40 monopod at Best Buy (only one I could get right away). It turned out to be a good idea, because I could still hand-hold the lens while shooting, but I could also rest the camera and lens over my shoulder or on the ground when I wasn't shooting and save my arms and neck. It also proved useful for steadying on some of the shots I took with the TC-17 teleconverter attached. If you don't want to carry your tripod on a trip, you might want to get a monopod just to make it easier to carry.

Congratulations on your new lens, Goose. Like kiwi, I too wish I could afford a 300mm f2.8 lens but they're WAY out of my price range. For my Olympus system, Zuiko's 300mm f2.8 runs about 8 grand new and I have yet to see a used one listed for sale. I have to settle for Sigma's 50-500mm f4-6.3 for my upgrade, not as quick as the f2.8 lenses but it'll be a big step up from my not so quick 70-300mm f4-5.6. Unfortunately I have to wait until AFTER next weeks camping trip before I can get the new lens. I hope to enjoy my new lens as much as you are enjoying yours. Nice pics Goose.

That's what I thought, but my summer job turned out to pay a little more than I thought ;)

And being a kid and not having to pay bills etc, helps too. I actually got this for $1500 at KEH.com; check it out they have lots of great used Nikon and Canon lenses for really cheap.

So my new Nikon 300mm f2.8 ED-IF Ais lens arrived today and I took it for a test drive. Results: AWESOME. I love this lens! It has amazing image quality (at least with my D5000), and although it weighs a lot, it's not too bad to carry for long walks. My new tripod (Manfrotto 190XPROB) is also a wonder! Unfortunately, this lens doesn't meter with my camera so I have to learn manual exposure on the fly
