I'm originally from Atlantic Canada, but moved here when I married my husband. I'm 27 now, and I'm not entirely sure how that happened. ;)

I go for a walk around the block every day for my health and take pictures of the birds I see. Periodically I go on a trip, or visit a new location for the day and get a new bird. I like to collect photos of them and keep a running count.

Since I've been moving fairly frequently since I got out of college, especially from one coast to the other, I'm left with a rather diminished social circle. I would love to have some other folks who might like to go for walks to see birds.

Besides my amateur photography (which is mostly used for getting and confirming IDs) I also do digital illustration and animation as a profession.

Not sure what else to say. So hello!

My name is Andy and I live in Buffalo, NY. I do not currently have any birds however I have done my share in the raising of several types of birds while growing up. I have hand raised Love Birds, Cockatiels, Quaker parrots and Sun Conures. Unfortunately they were my mother's pride and joys so I left home without birds about 15yrs ago. I am about to embark on a new journey with the purchase of a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo! I am so excited that I can hardly handle myself. lol

I have been doing my homework and I was looking at the lists of non-toxic plants/trees so that I can plan ahead. I ran across a thread somewhere talking about someone planting Sea Grape bushes for her birds. I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not they were considered safe? I am unable to find them on either the safe or non-safe lists. I did look up to find out that they are safe for human consumption and that wild birds are said to eat the "grapes" off of them.

Thank you so much!

“The reason birds can fly and we can't is simply that they have perfect faith, for to have faith is to have wings”

Introduction

Hi I just joined and know nothing about bird ID, so except a lot of what is this. My name is Lilly and I'm a life-long birding enthusiast. I mean I love 'em all. You know how some folks don't like certain birds, like the European Starling, for example, probably because they are so common, I like 'em just fine. Saw one in my backyard who had perfectly mimicked a Pacific Treefrog call, pretty amazing coming out of that bird! Some highlights I've encountered over the years: A White Stork flying over a field in Kent, WA. had to go to my world birds book for ID as these birds only occur in Europe, a male Cerulean Warbler landed on the ground 10 feet from me while I was waiting in line for the outdoor privy in Eastern Wa. while camping, taught me a valuable lesson to bring my camera no matter where I'm heading. A few winters ago we saw 50 Western Bluebirds feeding on a snowy highway in Eastern Washington in January. We were driving slowly so as not to hit any of the bluebirds, it was just amazing to see so many at once and so out of season for that region. Looking forward to reading your posts and sharing the love of birding with you all.

Hi there from upstate NY

I've been sticking around here for a little bit now, and figured I'd keep floating around, as I never know when I might be able to help out on a troublesome ID (and I had one of my own - some domesticated mallards).

I've been birding for quite awhile, and I love how there's always new information to learn about birds; a species I wasn't all that familiar with, a call I hadn't heard before, migration patterns, etc. I also enjoy how going out birding can be a bit of a gamble, you just never quite know what you'll run across. And I really love all birds. I don't consider any of them as pests or 'trash' species, and enjoy standing around attempting to ID the gulls that most people seem to dislike. I'm even a fan of catbirds and grackles.

I've also done some 'professional' work with birds. Last spring I finished up my Environmental Science/Bio degree and went off to intern for 3 months working with bird conservation. I got to meet dozens of purple martins and help band them, create suitable stopover site habitats, and band dozens of migratory birds, some of which I had never seen before in my life. It was amazing. I'm now considering going for my Master's in ornithology, and right now I'm also putting my foot in the door to volunteer on projects where I can get others interested in birds.

So that's my birding stuff in a nutshell! I think the fun is more in the details, such as falling into a swampy area attempting to see what was probably a green heron, being pooped on by all those martins, being attacked by barn swallows while innocently taking a break in a beach bathroom, and having a blue jay in the hand. Almost surreal.

Hello from southern Ontario

Hello everyone. I am fairly new to the site and just discovered the Introduce Yourself Forum, so let me introduce myself. I am an amateur photographer, with the emphasis on "amateur". I have a love for ALL kinds of wildlife and that is the subject of most of my photos, with birds being my most common subjects. I live out in the country so I have the pleasure of photgraphing MANY birds right here in my backyard or within a few miles of home. Within a few minutes walk of the house I have, a football sized field of grasses and wild flowers, two small ponds that feed a swampy marsh and small stream, a cedar bush, a hardwood bush, and a few corn fields. The variety in habitat provides for a large variation of wildlife right out my backdoor, especially birds. Although I thoroughly enjoy hiking and sitting out in the woods to get bird pictures, it doesn't get much easier to get bird pictures than having them come right to you, like the wild turkeys that walked right past my door on christmas morning did.

Like I said, I am an amatuer photographer and that is proven in many of my pictures. I have managed to get a couple of shots I am quite proud of though. Unfortunately I am very poor at organizing my pictures other than to post my more recent photos in a new folder each time. I like taking pictures, not organizing them. LOL Having said that, if anyone cares to sort through my folders and view my pictures, they can do so by following the link below. Feedback and constructive criticism is most welcome.
http://picasaweb.google.com/lonestranger102/

New From Iowa

Greetings on this noisy wet day. I may have to quick shut down with the storm happening.

I only saw today there were all these threads within WhatBird. This looks like a fun place. I had merely came by to try and ID a bird. So many helpful people here. I homeschool and am sure we will make plenty of use of this site. One of my scholars in particular has a love of birds. He will hug ducks, for crying out loud.

Up until fall 2007, we lived in Omaha, NE. Now we live waaay outside of DesMoines. It takes us an hour or more to get anywhere. But being out here has many experiences waiting for us. One of the things we noticed right away are the many different birds. I am sure we still have only caught a small percentage.

We enjoy feeding most of the birds around here and were tickled to have Juncos reside with us this winter. We got the seed out soon enough. They have gone, but we now have new visitors. There are some with the most beautiful song.

I look forward to participating here and learning some new things about birds.

Kim

American Redstart in Orlando FL

Hi 'experts'

Our wooded backyard gets lots of interesting winged visitors and while not an avid devotee of same, I couldn't help but be fascinated by this particular visitor because of the unusual orange markings. A rather old North American Wildlife book we have had a picture of an American Redstart that I confirmed via this website - but my question is simply "Is it unusual for this bird to be in the Orlando, Fl area?" The web page about the American Redstart does note our area is in the migratory pattern for it but having never seen one before I wanted to know if its behavior is all that unusual or simply the norm?

Thanks

pileated woodpeckers

Hello all,

I have a small grove of aspen trees in which several mating pairs of pileated woodpeckers have taken up residence. In fact I have observed at least seven nesting holes that are active. Is this unusual for such a normally secretive bird? The location is in central Wisconsin-----Thanks for responding
