THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED - YOU CAN GET THE SAME FUNCTIONALITY AS WINGED EXPLORER WITH OUR IBIRD PRODUCT AVAILABLE FOR THE IPHONE OR IPOD TOUCH. We understand this is a disappointment to the many users of Windows Mobile Software and we wish that we could continue to sell the product. The problem is that every device company that uses the Microsoft Mobile software implements it differently. This produces a situation where a program as complex as Winged Explorer will not work the same on every device. The result to us as been an overwhelming large amount of tech support is needed to help people get the product working. Out of every 10 copies we sell, at least 5 people have problems.

If Microsoft updates Windows Mobile so that it functions more consistently, and if they create a version of Windows Mobile that is as modern as the Apple iPhone, we will consider republishing Winged Explorer. However all is not lost.

We have created a version of Winged Explorer for the new Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. iBird has become one of Apple's most popular products for the iPhone. Help with VGA Touch Pro?

Hi,

I just purchased the program after trying the demo on my old cell phone which was an xv6800. I then upgraded my phone to a xv6850 Touch Pro and the program appears not to run. It only shows the startup screen as 1/4 of the device display. I believe this may be related to a change in resolution on the Touch Pro to 640 x 480. Is there any fix known for this?

Winged Explorer on Trimble GeoExplorer 2008, Windows Mobile 5.2.5

I haveinstalled the Winged Explorer software on my Trimble. When I start the app, the species listing in the Seach pane is squished, so that the entries overlap. Changing the text size in Settings\System does not help. Any suggestions?

Problem Installing on Vista

I really want to try this out on my T-Mobile MDA device...but I can't seem to run the installation on my Vista PC.

I get an error message stating that MS Activesync is not installed. Well, is that because what used to be called "Activesync" is called "Windows Mobile Device Center" on Vista and the installation program doesn't recognize that? I sync my Windows Mobile PDA to my Vista PC all the time -- it's in it's cradle now, happily synced, so the installation error message has it wrong.

Any ideas? I should mention that I'm running the 64-bit version of Vista...could that be the problem?

Which IPAQ do you think would be best for the Winged Explorer software?

I'm actually looking to buy a PDA just to use for this program. In Canada we have the IPAQ 2490 (which is apparently the same as the 2495) or the IPAQ 110. I don't know anything about PDA's or high tech gadgetry, so I'm wondering if you would recommend one of these ipaq models over the other.

Based on the requirements, it looks like it should run fine, but wanted to see if anyone had any first hand experience with it.

The web site says the Winged Explorer is not compatible with the iPAQ 200 which runs the same OS as the iPAQ 100. I have an iPAQ 210 and would like to run Winged Explorer. What is the incompatibility issue?

Winged Explorer Errors & Corrections

I just got Winged Explorer and loaded it on my IPAQ 111 without a hitch. Great piece of software!

I emailed a couple of observations to Mitchell and he suggested that I post my comments in this forum - so here goes ..

1) I have never seen a Little Blue Heron with feathers ruffled as depicted in the Little Blue Heron identification picture - perhaps I have have never seen one as agitated as this one seems to be. For identification purposes, it seems like the normal (unruffled) appearance would be more useful.

2) The Zenaida Dove does not have a sound file attached. I note that the sound file is present for the Zenaida Dove on the WhatBird site so this appears to be an oversite in the Winged Explorer Software.

WingedExplorer Installation Problem

I successfully installed the WE demo on an HTC Mogul using a 512K SD card. Loved it. Bought an 8GB SDHC card and downloaded the full version. I've tried to install WE several times (likely did something wrong, but not sure what that was), and always have the same problems. I've tried uninstalling the program and reinstalling, which seems to go smoothly. Regardless, the sounds don't work (I tap the speaker icon and nothing happens), under similar sounding on the Sounds tab the words "no data" are displayed, and when I tap the Species tab I get the error message: "An unexpected error has occurred..."

I did not uninstall the demo version before installing the full version. When I uninstalled the full version in order to try reinstalling it, I noticed that the PB folder was not deleted from the SDHC card. Don't know if that matters.

Oh! One more thing ... I tried putting the 512K SD card back in the device and found I could run the demo version. Sounds worked; no errors. So, had an idea that maybe I could copy the full version PB folder on the 512K SD card, and then the full version would work. Nope. Just got an error message asking that I insert the correct card.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm dying to start using WE in the field!

I have a friend who is starting to get interested in bird watching. He has a wonderful memory, and is really good at describing what he has seen. Last night, we were out to dinner, and he started asking us about a bird he had seen the previous evening. My wife and I were scratching our heads, because he was describing something we had never seen (among other field marks, a white stripe on the underside of the wing, front to back. Other birders are probably saying "Oh that is a ******, but we had never seen one).

Anyway, my wife said we'll need to hit the books when we get home, but I pulled out my WM device and started entering what we knew (location, wing shape, size) and it quickly narrowed down to a handful of birds, and one was obvious from the picture, a Common Nighthawk!

Hi,Currently I have a Ipaq HP series 1945. It does not have enough memory to install the demo... even to get started. My question is - once you release the actual product, will it come on an SD card making it possible for me to use my device?

Problem with update feature

I am running Windows XP and am using an HP ipaq. I am running the released version of Winged Explorer (1.0.0903) and updater version (1.11.0724).

The auto update feature tells me that there is a database update and a program update. When I click next, I receive the following error: "There was an error transferring the file: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. Would you like to retry?"

This occurred on Friday and again today (Monday).

I am behind a proxy server, could that be an issue?

Problem running Winged Explorer

I am using a HP IPAQ 2490b with a 4 gb SD card. I am running WM 6.0

I installed the demo without problem but when I try to run it I get the following error.

Can not find PInvoke.dll

Can anyone help me with this?

Winged Explorer for the iPhone?

Sorry if this has been addressed before; I look around a bit but didn't find an answer.

Are there any plans to create Winged Explorer for the iPhone or iPod Touch? I really like the looks of the software, and I want something more than just bird songs (which looks to be all that's available through birdPod).

Demo Installation Issue with 2 memory cards

I just installed the demo on an HP iPaq with 1 SD card and 1 CF card installed. I wanted the software installed on the CF card (1 GB free). During installation it asked what card to install on and listed three options, each named "Storage Card". Hmm. Not very helpful. I removed the SD card and started over. I chose the first "Storage Card" from the menu and completed the installation. The program runs fine. I then re-inserted the SD card, now the program fails indicating that the database cannot be found. Remove the SD card, it again runs fine. This is not a major issue for me, but it should probably be addressed somehow.

Demo Installation problem, and a question

I can't tell you how excited I am about this application. Unfortunatly, I was unable to get it to install on my Verizon XV6900 (HTC touch). The applicatoin itself installed, but when it came time to install the database, it would not recognize my SD card. Instead it found two devices called "Bluetooth" since I have a bluetooth explorer application for file OBEX file sharing, but it did not see my Storage Card device.

I verified the storage card was installed and accessible, and has over 1 Gig free.

Any suggestions? Any additional information I can provide to assist troubleshooting? Assuming we are able to resolve this, the question i have is whether you have set final pricing yet? I am ready to purchase sight unseen (and I have a birthday check burning a hole in my pocket too....).
