    Webcam ?

    Hopefully I'm in the right forum to ask.  Interested in using a webcam to do some watching for me.  Just documented nesting, birthing and departure of a new family of House Finches using my handheld on a random basis. Sure would have been easier (and likely more complete) to have set up a webcam -- I think.  Appreciate any thoughts/opinions/suggestions...r,BillP

    You are going to need a dedicated piece of software in order to run your web cam  you will have to decide do you want to document it by video or still images taken a predetermined time frame  example every 30 secs etc.

    You will need plenty of space on your hard drive or a web site that you can upload the images to via the web cam software.

    Another option is a self-contained webcam server. These are relatively new, and they take a lot of the headaches away for you.  You can pay as little as $100 for a consumer-level device up to as much as a thousand for a professional surveillance system.  Most of them have a wireless connection, and some kind of built-in network service (usually a live web server and some method to transfer images or video to another computer).
