    I need an orchard oriole!

I suspect that there is a pair of orchard orioles living around my place in Central Missouri, and I want to draw them out so I can make a positive identification. I have twice seen the male and once the female (maybe - see my other post, "yellow bird stumps novice"), but in the time it takes me to lift my binoculars, they're gone. They seem to be pretty ellusive. I know they like orange halves, but I definately don't want to attract any bugs. What can I do to get these guys to show themselves more? Or what time of day should I watch for them?

     Thanks!

I live in missouri too. I think that I would try to pick out the nest and wait for them to come, you could put hummingbird feeders out and grape jelly, I wouldn't worrie about bugs becouse orioles love bugs aswell. Another way of atracting them is to put out strans of frayed twine, atleast that one wouldn't attract bugs. that all I have.
    And Im only a teen

they are very ellusive.  being such a small bird that hangs out so high in trees, its very hard to get a good look.  while paired, and the female is incubating or the pair is feeding chicks, the male will sing continuously.  i mean from dawn to dusk every couple of minutes in order to protect is territory.  so you can listen for what 4-5 trees he usually sings from and hang out near them, you should get some good looks if you are patient.

about the orange.  put it out........if bugs are attracted you will have orioles and flycatchers.

I have at least two of them. One's a first year, pretty yellow bird; the other adult black and red/orange. I put orange slices and they didn't touch them. They hang out in my Mamosa trees because they like the nectar. I hear them singing constantly, but I don't see them often enough.
