    What bird has this nest?

The bird I've seen on this nest is a small brown bird with light and dark stripes on the head.   The nest is about 1.5 feet off the ground, in thick grass.   The nest is in the corner of my vegetable garden, and uses some old tomato cages and stakes for support.  I found the nest when I went looking for some tomato cages I needed for the garden, but I don't plan to disturb the nest.    There are a lot of barn cats around, but the garden is surrounded by a non-electrified electric netting, and perhaps that is why the bird has managed to keep a nest here.  There are five speckled eggs.

Could be a red-winged blackbird.  I've seen them nesting some distance from wetlands in an alfalfa field.  If there is a male around you will probably know it.

sounds like a wren by your description, and i googled for wren egg pix and some look similar to yours. try looking at pix on this site of the wrens in your area.

Thanks.  I haven't seen a male red-winged blackbird, and this bird is smaller than that.

Thanks.    I looked at the wren pictures, but none of them appeared to have stripes on the top of the head like the bird I saw.   The wrens seemed to have side eye stripes.

But, I only got a quick look and will check again.

Hi---I'm sorry, I didn't get that the stripes were "on top of the head". Try some of the sparrows---I know that doesn't narrow it by much, but that's sounding more likely for your bird.
