These were taken today at the El Corte Madera Creek Open Space Preserve in the Santa Cruz mountains. There were several of them and they returned to their normal activity after I stood fairly still for a few minutes. My Kaufman tells me that these are the "Oregon" form that we have in California. The black head made it tough for me to get decent shots, as there were many where the dark eye blended into the black head, making the bird look oddly eyeless.
