I happened upon a family of Pileated Woodpeckers this morning at Susquehanna State Park. I think there were four of them that kept moving back and forth between some tall trees. One of the young ones stayed still long enough for me to get a decent look. He was pretty high up in a tree, so they're all cropped, but they're still much better than any I've been able to get before this. Actually, I think I have shots of two different birds, a male and a female.

I have a long list of birds I would like to get a better shot of.  To get this series knowing you were on the hunt is a bit of a bonanza.  Shot #3 is my favorite.  Getting a series like this to me is as exciting as getting a new fuzzy bird.  Way to go.

Matt is right... great series.  When you give yourself opportunities, sometimes it works out.  Moral... go out birding more often.

Thanks for the comments, and I agree that you just have to get out there (with your camera) and sooner or later better opportunities will present themselves. Up until now, I have had no luck photographing this bird. The best look I ever got was of one six inches off the ground, tearing up a big, rotten stump. I watched him out the open window of my car from fifteen feet away for a good five minutes, completely unimpeded. My camera was at home.
