    Black-bellied Whistling Duck-Delaware

I was vacationing with my family in Dewey Beach, DE and drove by Silver Lake in Rehoboth Beach at 6:15AM on 7/13/09. I actually did a double-take and had to back the car up when I saw this guy among the Mallards and Canada Geese. When I got back home today I checked ebird and saw that he had been reported by several other people the week before. It made my morning.

Is that a certain species, or just a hybrid of various ones?

Sorry - nevermind - I see now that you put the name of the duck on your subject line - beautiful bird!

They're very pretty - I've never even heard of them  before. Thanks for sharing. This really seem like year for birds visiting new locations.  We've had a crested caracara and a northern cardinal here in the last week and we've had lots of sighting of indigo buntings.  I get RBA's for the Vancouver BC area and they had a long necked stilt for the first time in about 10 years.  I wonder what the fall migration will bring us.

Beautiful set of pix! Thanks for sharing them. I've seen them many times, but never took a good pic.

Did you get to hear the duck 'whistle'? They have an unusual sound---can be quite startling if you aren't expecting it and quite loud if they're agitated.

8 days camping in Western Colorado and 5 new birds: Juniper Titmouse, Mountain Bluebird, Black-billed Magpie, Clark's Nutcracker, Gray Jay. Beautiful!!!

Thanks. No, he was quiet as a mouse. He actually took off and flew across the lake after I took the first couple shots, so I had to track him down on the other side. Luckily, he had landed about ten feet from the street so I was able to shoot right from the car. He actually walked towards me as I was shooting. Very cooperative guy. I have listened to their calls online since.
