    Re: Ruby-throated Hummingbird

I used the winged toolbar and my hummingbird was identified as the Ruby Throated  Hummingbird  -  but the picture in the field guide didn't look anything like my photo.  I had to go through 3 tabs before I saw a female of the species.

Suggestion:  On the Species page, identification page and the portrait page you have only the male pictured.  Not until I went to the variations tab did I see a female pictured.  It would be helpful on the Species Overview page to have a picture of both male and female of the species.

Personally, I use the National Wildlife Federation guide book, more than any others. As for checking online, I've found it easier to just google the name of the bird and check out the various sites that come up, many have real photos which are better to help ID

I am like you I type in the name of the bird that I am looking for and get the web sites that have some pictures of the male and female.  About two weeks ago I poseted about having Ruby-throated hummingbird making it's appearence here.  Today  I have three fighting over the feeder.  It's so funny to watch the flying around to protect the feeder from each other. some times they will wait in line to feed. I am just waiting for the females to show up .

I have the same problem. The female is often not mentioned so that when the bird picture comes up you dont always see it.
