I use one to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.  I'm sure it makes the water more visible to the birds as well, but the effect of this is hard to qualify.

What kind of bird bath do you have? I have one of those large, standard looking bird baths and my birds don't use it either. I read a post somewhere else about this type being too deep. They suggested using a terra-cotta flower pot dish. I got one with a 16" diameter and set it on a big section of a log I had. The birds cannot stay out of it! It's pretty hysterical. No birds will get in it for an hour or two, then one sparrow will jump in and start bathing. Within a minute, it's everyone in the pool. I've seen the dish so crowded that one sparrow came in for a landing but there was no room so he landed on another bird's head! Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture. The only issue is that 10 or 12 birds furiously bathing at once will splash the water out pretty quick. I usually have to refill it four times a day.

My new bird bath sat birdless for a full year - even through the most icy winter in years (I kept it thawed out) - not once did I actually see anybody stop by for a drink. And forget bathers.  Desperate, I sprung for the basic model water wiggler and what a difference it made! That gentle movement does the trick!  Now I have bath visitors all the time.

P.S. This is my first post. Hi everyone!
