I enjoy hearing them here in Florida ... calling "Halp! Halp!", When I lived in Southern California I had a pair of them. The male was killed by a car, but the female lived many years. She was so intelligent! I named her Lulu and she would answer to her name. One evening she would not return to roost in "her" tree in our front yard, but would answer me from down in the valley, gradually coming closer until she was across the road - but no closer. I suddenly realized that my husband's chicken-killer Weimaraner was in the front yard. Once I put him in his keenl at the back, Lulu returned to her tree. She never worried about our other big dogs, just the chicken killer.
I gre up in India, where peafowl were hunted for meat. :-(
