    gender my woodpecker

    Attachment: RNSA question.jpg
I believe this is a Ren-naped Sapsucker.  Is it a female or juvenile?  Taken last week in Arizona.

I believe it's a female, as the chin doesn't appear to have quite as much red

    Re: gender my woodpecker

It's a typical female. Males have red cheeks, and juveniles have virtually no red at all.

    Re: gender my woodpecker

Thanks for the observation.  I was not concentrating on the red but the lack of the white stripe that runs from above the beak to the back of the neck and then back to the chest that you see on both the adult male and adult female (also seen on the yellow-bellied).  I now assume that this stripe is variable.  Thanks.
