    What Junco?

    Attachment: IMG_4025.JPG

Taken in Wichita, Ks. yesterday.  Sorry for the bad picture, I have only seen the black/white type of junco. I read through the thread that Photgog started "Junco red-backed" and I looks to me like what Matt called a Oregon Junco.  What do you all think?

as far as lfe list goes, do you count all juncos as one life bird?  Tia

    Re: What Junco?

from what i have read in the bird books there are two main divisions. Yellow eyed and dark eyed juncos. There are suposedly lots of variations on the dark eyed and just a couple of the yellow eyed. I get at least 6 or 7 different ones here but i think part of that is gender. The slate colored with the red rusty back are my most common and the oregon just behind that, I only get a few of the yellow eyed juncos I get the pink sided ones once in awhile.

    Re: What Junco?

There have been many life list discussions on the forum.  At the end of the day, its your list and the person you are comparing it to.  My argument has always been.... what person with a reddish egret red morph on their life list wouldn't give their eye teeth to see a white morph.  In your case, the Oregon looks like a completely different bird than the red-backed.  A birder with either an Oregon or a Red-backed would be just as excited to get the other as to get a different species all together.  Count away or don't, fun either way.  I would be very impressed with someone that had all 7 varieties.

DKLUCIUS, you are out of range for the yellow-eyed.  They are very distinctive, so great bird.

As far as life lists go....  I personally use a 279(a), 279(b) sort of thing.  For example, I don't count the Krider's and Harlan's ssps of Red-tailed Hawk as individual life birds, they are (b) and (c) after 'eastern'.  The 'Red' Fox sparrows I get here in CT are (a), and the sooty/pacific one I had in Alaska is (b).

And for the bird in question,  it almost looks a bit like a 'pink-sided' Junco ssps.  However, I can tell you from studying the Slates here in CT last winter, there can be extreme variations.  And I believe integrades as well.  If I'm not mistaken, KS in in 'Pink-sided' land.

Are you sure that this is not a Gray Headed??? Red on back may indicate Gray headed that is in range for your area...

    Re: What Junco?

i posted the same picture on here a couple weeks ago and was told it was the slate colored. I do get both the grey headed and the slate colored  the main difference to me is the slate colored is more of a blue grey and the grey headed is mediium grey. Also i get the slate and grey colored without the rust spots

    Re: What Junco?

i'm sure anybody would know more than me. i am strickly backyard amateur viewer. All i usually know is what others tell me. This time of year there are anywhere from a dozen to 2 dozen mixed juncos feeding at any time. and many different variations of colors and markings,

The image you have shown is a Gray-headed Male (Dark-eyed Junco)

the ones that look all grey (slate colored) are Slate-colored and the ones that look red (body / white breast and a black head are dark-eyed Junco.
