    Is this an immature Brant?

    Attachment: DSC_0129i.jpg

    Hello, first post here.

For starters, Wow!  Have they ever made this site hard to intuit!  It took an embarrassingly long time just to figure out how to join, upload a photo and how to get this posting window open in the proper forum.  Hopefully the right people will hear this and SIMPLIFY for the sake of new-comers!

So I hope this link to the photo works!

I'm guessing it's a Brant, but back markings seem more loon-like than in any keys I've used, and it's not suppose to be this far west.

The location is Central Ontario, 50 clicks inland from Georgian Bay.  Bird has been solo in a semi-flooded grass field for over a week now.  I've not seen it fly -- don't know if it's wounded -- because the dog and I got surprisingly close to it and all it would do is hunker down.  I opted not to disturb it.  Date is sighting is 06/11/2009.  When migrating flocks of Canada Geese use the field, he gets scarce but returns from ?? when they're gone.

Definitely a juvenile Brant. Good bird! I would make sure that there are no Brants being kept domestic in the area though, as this one doesn't seem to fly, his wings could be clipped. The fact that it is a juvenile seems to support his "wildness", however. We have similar Barnacle Geese here in NC - but as they're being kept by a local park, I can't count them on my list!

    Total birds seen: 205
    Latest lifers:
Brown Creeper, Field Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow
    Favorite lifers:
Black-billed Cuckoo, Reddish Egret, Wood Stork

On the home page of this forum at the very top is a heading that clearly says "PLEASE: READ THIS BEFORE POSTING." Obviously you didn't do that or you wouldn't have had any trouble.
