    Carolina Wren Nest Question~~~~~!!!

Crying I have posted a question about the Carolina Wren a few days back and had it answered pretty quickly...so I'm hoping for some words of wisdom now!

The nest had 4 eggs in at last look by me over a week ago, and they since have hatched ( I assummed because mommy or daddy were going  in and out alot w/ bugs), and so I had my husband keep his car out of that side of the carport as to not give one of our very persisitent cats a launching pad to get up there to it.( She tried once a few weeks ago when she noticed the parent perched on the rim of the wastebasket/nest).

Well, this morning when I went to open the back door to the carport, I noticed right away that the evil cat had been left outside overnight( they are all usually in every night), and she ( I am assumming), managed to get up there somehow and knock the basket over on its side ! I was soooo mad, and ran right up to it , got a stepladder to stand on and held my breath as to what I may or may not have found when I peeked in... The nesting material was all but completely loose and dangling from the basket and at first glance I didn't see anything at all...but then I noticed a very small baby mixed up in all the mess. I untangled him from the material and re-arranged the nesting material back to its almost original looking mass while looking for others in there. I placed it in the cup of the nest( it was still very much alive and begging for food), and starting looking for signs of anyone else... In the rim of a planter on the same shelf I found another baby( not as spry, but alive) and placed it in the nest w/ the other one and then put everything back the way it was. I stepped inside and berated the evil cat while resigning to myself that thjey were as good as dead I suppose( I've had  too much death recently-its getting to be too muchSad) I walked past the sliding back doors about 10 minutes later and saw mommy or daddy wren perched on the rim of the basket going in and out-and looking distressed. I was happy to see her/him but now I wonder if she is going to abandon thee two left or will they still try with what they got? I saw her/ him flitting around the trees here hunting for insects-so I'm hopeful that they will keep trying, but I wanyed to know if anyone knows anything about their typical behavior in this type of situation.... HELP!

    Re: Carolina Wren Nest Question~~~~~!!!

Just a sidenote- GOOD news ( I think)  Mommy or Daddy bird has returned a few times since posting my question an hour or so ago!

I would like to know if anyone thinks it would be a good idea to move the basket to a nearby location, keeping it looking the same, so that nothing can get to it, except mommy and/or daddy?

We have a spreader/fertilizer thing hanging high up on the wall next to the shelving that has a space on it that I could just tuck this basket into and it would be safe from prying cats or anything else. The adult wren is using it as a perch as it is right next to the top shelf where the basket with her nest is now. I would then move the whole shelving unit away so that there would be no way for anything to get near the nest.  Good or bad idea????

Thanks anyone and everyone for your replies!

    Re: Carolina Wren Nest Question~~~~~!!!

     Sidenote:

Weeks later- and the two remaining babies are grown and gone! Also, have come to find out recently that we have a possum scrounging around out there and in the vicinity of where the nest was. I wonder if he/she was the culprit of the nest wrecking episode???

I am just glad we can park our cars again inside the carport! ( And that two new Carolina Wrens  are in the world!)
