2 birds fighting(?) in Winston-Salem, NC

I'm not clear what these birds are. I saw them fighting(?) yesterday in an urban area in or near Windston-Salem, North Carolina.

male and female House Sparrows. Possibly not fighting ;)

Haha. I figured as much. But, since it was in January, I thought maybe it was early for breeding season. They got 10" of snow today.
