    Green bird in Southern Indiana?

    Hello,

I'm new to bird feeders but am enjoying them immensely.  We had a beautiful bird show up that I can't identify and I'm hoping someone here may be able to help.  This was a green, finch sized bird.  Head, throat, and underside were almost an irridescent shade of lime green.  The wings were brown with two bars.  Actually, in my search, I've ran across pictures of Hutton's Vireo ( http://thebirdguide.com/digiscoping/photos/huttons_vireo.htm) and it looked a whole lot like it but they're not supposed to be anywhere around here... southern Indiana, on the border of Kentucky.  Also, I'd say the green on ours was a lighter, livelier shade.  Seen at our finch feeder - suburban setting near mature woods.  I appreciate it.

I'm not finding anything exactly right. I suspect you'll need to post a photo to get a good identification. It may well be a female or juvenile of one of the more colorful varieties. Good luck.

I'm thinking it might be a female painted bunting.  They are not usually in Indiana, but Indiana isn't far off the painted buntings normal summer area.  Perhaps it was just a bit off course!  This sight doesn't have a picture of the female painted bunting, but if you look elsewhere on the Internet, you will probably find one.

Thank you, both.  You got me wondering if it may be a female goldfinch.  I did a Google Images search and found a few female goldfinches that looked somewhat similar.  I'm still not firmly convinced as the wings really looked more brown with two white bars on mine.  It was back today and I tried to get a picture but the screen around the porch I lurk in obfuscates the yard really bad - to the camera, anyway.  I may have to tinker with a manual focus and/or take out a screen from one of the house's side windows, closeby.

    Thanks,

    Pete
