    Great Backyard Bird Count

The Great Backyard Bird Count is coming up soon! I'm going to try it. Is anyone else planning on participating this year?

Yes.  I've just received an email from Cornell University reminding me of it.  I love to do it.  any old excuse to watch birds will do!  HA!

Yep, I've participated these last 2 years, and I'm looking forward to doing it this year.  I really like how they place it at such an odd date, when a lot of people aren't out and about birding as much as other times of the year.  You never know what might show up in the dead of Winter! Wink

Well it is called the Backyard bird count. In the winter most people probably just observe close to home although I would like to do one in the Spring for a change

True, but despite its name, I like to make it more like a Big Day i.e. a lot of birding in not a lot of time.  In the past, I've covered some of the local small towns, it was great fun (at least for me, my brother who came along thought otherwise Wink)  It encourages me to do some intense birding after all the Christmas Bird Counts are over, and Spring migration is still a ways away.

We just found out about this today, and we're going to participate this year for the first time.  Here's hoping we get another foot of snow before then!

    Re: Great Backyard Bird Count

The birds are late visiting us this year - my count will look puny in the back yard. For instance, last year we had 2 pairs of painted buntings - this year only one female so far. Only one yellow-rumped warbler this year instead of many as in the past. I don't think the northern snow could be enticing them to stay there! Cool

I might go out to the Merritt Island Wildlife area and look at the visitors instead!
