I live in southern California, and (I'm presuming) an owl has been sounding off outside my bedroom window in a nearby tree for a couple of weeks. I compared its hoots (at least they sound like hoots to me ) to recordings I had found on the internet of calls of males and females of the owls native to California and can't seem to find anything similar enough to make a definitive decision. Any help for this beginner would be much appreciated!

Thank you!
I tried to listen to it, autobahnca, but it came up no longer available. What time of day do you hear this?
Oh, and welcome to Whatbird!

That is a Western Screech Owl.
It's awesome you were able to get a recording. I wish I got them more often up here.
