    Hummingbird Feeder placement.

    Hey now,

I saw a few hummers at my new house this past July.  I purchased a feeder and want to put it out to attract some this spring.

I already have a tube feeder and a thistle sock out front. I don't want to have things hanging all over the place in front on my place so I am considering hanging the Hummingbird feeder under the porch.

Has anyone had experience with hanging one under their front porch?  Would like to keep it out of the sun in the summer time so I am thinking this might be a good place.   Also do you think the hummers will find the feeder??

    Thanks for any info

    Hi!

I haven't actually hung one under the porch, but one of mine hangs about 2 ft from my window and is kind of under an overhanging roof.  It doesn't seem to bother them at all. You may want to start with a second one further out in the yard where it might be noticed better.  Or hang a nice flowering plant to attract them.  Here's a link to a hummingbird site.  They talk about a kinds of stuff - how to attract, what to feed, etc.  They also have the migration map to show the first sitings so you can get the feeder out when they are just checking out the area and maybe they will pick your house for their home!

Good Luck - hope this helps!

Mine is hanging out away from the house but I can see it just fine and it's close to trees and brush.  I've had my feeder out for a week or so but no bird yet.(I changed the water over the weekend)  I can't wait to add my sighting to the map at hummingbirds.net!

All through summer last year I had hummingbirds flying under the roof over my porch and I didn't have a feeder then.  They would hover and look in the window as it to say where's ours?  So this year I have a hummingbird feeder on my front porch for them.  I can't wait til they get here!  I hope they like it.

    Re: Hummingbird Feeder placement.

I put one on the front porch last year, saw nothing go to it, till one day I saw a hummingbird go around the house and sneak up on it. So they were going to it, but never when I was around.

I had a lot more luck with some wild honeysuckle in the backyard, they hovered around that stuff and you could get pretty close. I just put the feeder up again on the front porch, but even if I don't see them, I figure they are getting fed and will hang around some.

Oh wow, I must apologise, I skimmed the first post, you said "under" the porch. Now I feel stupid. Sorry about that.
