    Woodpecker ID, please

I saw this bird today during an early evening walk.  Location is San Francisco Bay Area, California.  Thanks in advance!

    Re: Woodpecker ID, please

I am no expert but I think it is a Nuttall's Woodpecker. The location and the facial pattern seem to fit. I see Nuttall's  4 or 5 times a week in Chico.Great photos by the way!!!!!!Smile

Wow, that is a beautiful bird whatever it is.

I think it might be a Hairy Woodpecker?

    Re: Woodpecker ID, please

The bill looks a bit smaller than a hairy and I would go with a nuttall
The photo shown is Barnie. My faithful and loving companion of 18 years, who passed into the next life on 11-8-2008. God rest her soul! She's missed!

    Re: Woodpecker ID, please

Thanks, all, appreciate the ID and the kind words.  Must give credit to the rig, Canon EOS 40D, with EF 100-400mm L lens.  Perfect for birding!
