I'm giddy with the discovery of this marvelous site! I've selfishly only taken the time to register and gush about the newest bird in our yard, but tomorrow I'll devote time to reading some of the rich information all of you birdlovers share here.
We live in the InterMountain west in a very arid region, though the Snake River threads south of our ridge. Our irrigation is by ditches and depends on snow accumulation in the surrounding mountains. The biggest adventure for us has been the recent introduction of our bird bath heater and the resulting melee every day!
Having signed a contract with Fish and Game to provide refuge for game birds, we never anticipated the other species that would eventually nest here. I moved from the Midwest and missed some of the birds there. Well, blessings descended: a large flock of Cedar Waxwings visited last fall and have decided to stick around for breeding...wow! This is a huge part of my life.
