    identification of a duck

I have never used a forum before, so I am unsure how to get the picture of the duck on this post--but I did create an album called "ducks and such" and the pic is the only one in the album so far. I am thinking that maybe it is an american black duck but I am really not sure. The picture was taken in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I have seen alot of mallards, but this one just seemed different.

According to the sibley guide, mallard is out of your range, but according to the Whatbird map it says mallard live in your area. If there are any in Nova Scotia, I think it's a mallard. What made you point away from mallard?

    Re: identification of a duck

We don't have any shortage of mallards around here; they are everywhere.  People feed them, so many of them stay the winter. I quess what made me think the duck wasn't a mallard was the lighter color, the mallards I have seen seem darker in color.  But then again I usually see them in huge flocks, this one was alone on a quite lake on a beautiful sunny morning--perhaps just the light made him look different.  The more I look at the picture, the more I see that he does look exactly like the pics of mallards I have. Thank you for your quick response.
