    Another Bird ID Request

You were so helpful to me here before in identifying a bird in my backyard.

This time I was at a garden center, walking around among some trees, and an unusual (to me) bird made a long, high pitch whistle as I approached.  I stopped and saw it running along the ground in front of me and then squatting and moving it's wing out and around. As if to signal something to me.  It actually reminded me of something my son once told me that some birds will fake being hurt to distract your attention away from it's babies.

The bird's body was about the size of a dove, I guess.  But had longer legs that it was running along on.  It was a brown backed bird, brown wings, with a white neck and chest. Brown up the back onto the top of the head, and to the beak. The beak was white and wide between the eyes, and then came to a sharp narrow point on the tip. A distinctive marking was the black circle around its neck. And another black circle, a bit narrower, further down where it's neck meets its chest.

     Does anyone recognize this bird??

sounds like it could either be a killdeer or a brown thrasher but I'm leaning more toward the killdeer because they typically play the "injured bird" to distract predators from their nests

Yes! I googled "KillDeer" in Google Images, and the pictures look just like what we saw.  Interesting that it says they favor the gravel, as we were walking in the back area of a garden center, where the ground is all dirt and gravel. I wish I'd known that their nests are on the ground, under a bush, or somewhere like that. I was looking in the trees in case I could catch a glimpse of a nest.

I love encountering birds -- like visitors from heaven.

Yeh!  i thought I had it right!  We had a killdeer lay eggs in our church parking lot one year (it's gravel) and we had to mark it so no one would run over it.

I feel the same way about seeing birds.  Everytime I see a new one I consider it to be a wonderful gift
