Cedar waxwing.  Sexes are indistinguishable, both are crested.

My birds do not have a black cap, the head and neck are a uniform soft light brown with a strong black eyeline, and the bodies are slimmer with longer tails.  Yellow tips on the ends of the tail feathers.  Some of them have 5-6 tiny scarlet pinfeathers at the end of the wing feathers closest to the body.    I have photos but I haven't yet figured out how to post photos here.

    Thanks.

I just looked at a picture of a cedar waxwing - yes, that's what these are.  My next question is why would more than 20 of them turn up dead in a corner of my garden in the last 3 days?  Six Sun. p.m., 10 more an hour later.  2 more Tuesday, 3 more Wed.  Just lying there on their side.  My radish patch looked like a battlefield, with 10 bodies laid out. We have no poison of any kind, not even snail bait.  We are heartbroken.  West Nile Virus Hotline people took some for testing, but they did not think it was the virus.  Vector Control said rat poison would not drop them so quickly all at once.
