The most beautiful bird was in my backyard today

    Attachment: woopecker.jpg

This bird is very large... at least 8 inches tall, beautiful wingspan of white and black. He/she has a red head shaped like a tack hammer if that makes any since, he/she is a woodpecker of some sort because of the way it shimmied up the side of the tree while i was trying to get a picture. I would love to know what it is. It seems to love the orange flavored suet block.

I live in very southeast texas in a heavily wooded area of pine and oaks. I was hoping one of you could work your magic with the photo shop to see if we can get a better view of him seeing how he was very camara shy.

Yes, I agree.  That is a Pileated Woodpecker.  Wait till you hear him call!  They sound almost prehistoric.  Nice picture!

Pileated woodpeckers are indeed, beautiful and impressive to see. They're one of the most spectacular woodpeckers!
