I had Carolina's here last year, but this wren is building a nest in my bluebird box (I believe it would be a female -- the male started the nest almost a month ago) -- I presume this is a house wren then?

This one still resembles a carolina wren with that eyestripe

This is a Carolina Wren, note the warm brown back and the distinct eye-brow.

Is it typical for Carolina's to nest in a birdhouse? 

The male Carolina Wren picks several potential nesting sites, & starts to build a nest in each.  Then, he takes the female to see each site.  The female picks the best site for the nest, & finishes the nest building.
