My first reaction when seeing this bird was:
I have never seen a woodpecker on the ground before. Size of bird, bill and action using bill was all common with a woodpecker. This bird was brown in color. Had a red patch at nape, and a black band across chest. Was unable to get photo. He was seen in Eastern, Upper NY State. Can you help identify.
