help ...what kind of bird is this?

My first reaction when seeing this bird was:

I have never seen a woodpecker on the ground before.  Size of bird, bill and action using bill was all common with a woodpecker.  This bird was brown in color.  Had a red patch at nape, and a black band across chest.  Was unable to get photo.  He was seen in Eastern, Upper NY State.  Can you help identify?

There was NO WHITE on this bird.  Coloring was: different shades of brown with a black band across chest.  Red patch on back of head area, not top of head or side, but nap area.  (like back of neck)

Sounds like a female yellow-shafted northern flicker.

I would also say look at the northern flicker.  They are in the woodpecker family, and spend a lot of time feeding on the ground.

I agree. The ground foraging, red nape, and black creseant on neck all points to flicker.
