I have heard and read that it is rare to have red-headed woodpeckers and red-bellied woodpecker in the same area. I have a small feeder with suet cages on both sides and twice last weekend I saw a redhead on one side and a red-bellied on the other at the same time. It was awesome. Earlier this month the redheads would chase the red-bellied away even though the red-bellies are bigger. Last year I had a pair of both (saw a juvy redhead late in the season). This year I have the pair of red-bellies and at least 4-6 redheads (I think the offspring of the original pair has also returned). I have seen four redheads at one time in my tree/feeders and I thought I saw 2 more fly in as 2 were flying out. From what I understand the redheads are rare in NE Ohio? Just wondering?
