    Developing an addiction, I think

Hello, my name is Tim and I'm afraid I'm becoming a bird-a-holic.  I have been looking at birds for a little over a year now.  I raise registered Texas Longhorns on my ranch in central texas south of Waco.  The "undeveloped" part of my property has been untouched for 75+ years and is quite diverse and wild.  I have just gotten serious about birding my place and have begun to keep a species list in the last few months.  I'm up to 74 species and counting.  I'm working on a conservation plan to preserve and improve the habitat.  I'm thrilled to have this website as a resource since I'm inexperienced at identifying many of the birds I see.  Thanks to all who make this site what it is.

Hi Tim!  Sounds like you have quite a wonderful setting to explore your developing addiction, and I bet nature will reward you many times over for your efforts to protect and preserve the habitat.  Kudos!

Re: Developing an addiction, I think

I'm having trouble posting anything to this forum.  There doesn't seem to be a starting place on the page I'm looking at.  I would like to post a photo of a bird I've been watching down by the Mexican border here in San Diego, but havn't figured out how to do it.  No-one seems to know the name of this bird, and it isn't in my field guides.  I don't believe it is native to this area, but there are two adults and two immatures now, where as there was only one around the area two years ago when I first spotted it.  Can anyone help me get started posting on the forum so that I can publish the picture and maybe get it ID'ed?  Thanks, Birddoggey

Hi everyone - Im also a bird addict and loving every minute of it!

Birddoggey - sounds like you want to start a post in the Bird ID forum. Go to the main forum page and then click on the ID forum and above the topics (or threads) on the left there is a link that says something like "make a post". Click it and you can say whatever you want and add a pic to it. There is also an area to name your topic. Also, it may take a few secs for the post to show up - so dont get nervous if you dont see it right away! Hope this helps!

    Happy Birding!

I know exactly what you mean, about a year ago a House Finch got caught in my oven vent...I spent 3 days with an old birding book trying to identify it! LOL!!! Can you imagine! LOL Once I FINALLY identified it I was HOOKED. Every bird I see I need to know what it is.

My husband made a joke that bird watchers move their heads like birds, darting from side to side looking at ever little movement from every angle LOL!

That is amazing about your property, you should photograph all those birds if you can!

Good Luck T.L. and God grant us more conservation minded people like yourself.

Hi Tim, from a fellow Texan AND birding addict! It's thrilling, huh?

My eyes (hee hee) perked up when you said you are near Waco. Guess what? I was RAISED in GATESVILLE, TEXAS, so I know the area! I bet there are some great birds around there. Sadly I have not been back in a while. My dad sold the family ranch a couple of years ago because we all hardly made it down there anymore!

I am so excited to hear you are working on conservation plans. I know my husband (he's a homebuilder in Austin) would be interested to hear more and how he can help! Would love to hear more about it if you care to share or email us! (Wendi@SpecialeHomes.com). I too am a newbie to the site and i find the identify the bird part especially helpful!

Yep, i'm happy to say you are most likely on your way to a (wonderful) addiction!
